Membership

MEMBERSHIP

(a) Full membership of the Association is open to those non-political charitable grantmaking organizations legally established or with a legal presence in East Africa or elsewhere that meet all published criteria for membership as determined from time to time by the Board.

(b) Associate membership is open to non-political charitable organizations that do not currently fulfil all criteria for membership but who fully support the Mission and the Objects of the Association.

(c) Affiliate membership is open to non-political non-grantmaking bodies that have an interest or involvement in the practice of philanthropy and in the Mission and the Objects of the Association.

The Board shall have the following duties in relation to applications for membership.

(i) to approve applications which meet the conditions set out above and admit to membership;
(ii) to reject applications which do not meet the said conditions;
(iii) in any case of doubt, to determine whether an application should be approved or rejected or approved subject to such conditions as the Board may think fit.

The Board shall have the following powers in relation to membership:

(i) for good and sufficient reason to terminate or amend the category or conditions of the membership of any member, or impose fresh conditions, provided that the member concerned shall have the right to be heard by the Board before a final decision is made;
(ii) to interpret the criteria and conditions for membership and publish its interpretations;
(iii) to make and publish rules about the procedures for admission and termination of membership and for the collection of subscriptions;
(iv) to request such information from applicants as it deems necessary for the fulfilment of its duties under clause 5(g) above and from members for the proper collection of subscriptions;

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA
• Member organizations have full autonomy in their grantmaking activities and a track record in leveraging resources.

• Member organizations agree to abide by the Association’s Code of Ethics.

• Member organizations have been active grantmakers or have been active in the field of social development for at least one year.

• Member organizations make grants through an open and transparent process to at least five organizations/individuals each year.

• Member organizations have a working presence in any of the East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda).

• A fundamental operational purpose and activity of member organizations is grantmaking.

Categories of Membership

A. Full Membership: Open to grantmaking organizations, both foreign and local /domestic that meet all criteria for participation.

B. Associate Membership: Open to organizations that do not currently fulfil all criteria for membership but who fully support the Mission and the Objectives of the Association.

C. Affiliates/Partners: Open to non-grantmaking bodies (internationaland domestic organizations) that have an interest or involvement in the practice of philanthropy and in the mission of the Regional Association of Grantmakers.
