This month’s issue of the Alliance magazine covers a special feature on 'Emerging philanthropy and what it stand for. Guest editor Olga Alexeeva of CAF Global Trustees says that giving because it's fashionable, as an expected accessory to a wealthy lifestyle, will not be good enough to make real changes in the world. Interviews with donors from all corners of the world are included in this "dangerous and radical" issue from Alliance.
The centre of philanthropy is increasingly shifting from north and west to south and east, but what will this emerging philanthropy look like? What will be its objectives and values?
This special feature includes interviews with donors from all corners of the world: Jet Li from China, whose aim is to see each Chinese person contributing one yuan a month (around USD $ 0.15); Olga Kurylenko from Ukraine, who is already exploring philanthropy after her first major international movie; actress Chulpan Khamatova and foundation leader Irina Prokhorova, equally committed to making change happen in Russia; Rishi Khosla from India, trying to promote the concepts of research and impact measurement; Nabil Qaddumi from the Middle East, looking for sustainable solutions to poverty and injustice; Regina Vidigal Guarita from Brazil, on the need for professional, responsible philanthropy. The feeling of taking responsibility for one's society comes through loud and clear in all these interviews.
Contributions also come from Sigrid Rausing and Jacqueline Delia-Bremond from Europe, and finally from Peter Karoff, founder of Boston-based The Philanthropic Initiative, who reflects on all the contributions to what he calls this 'dangerous and radical' issue of Alliance.
