Nomination Criteria

The East Africa Philanthropy Awards seeks primarily to identify, recognize and award different players in the philanthropic circles within the East African region for their exemplary and unique contributions towards the development of the regions’ social, economic and democratic environment

The East African Philanthropist Award will be given to those who serve as an example to others through their material and financial support, as well as their willingness to tread untried paths. These philanthropists move and inspire the East African region ever closer to the renewal of a healthy tradition of giving and philanthropy.

The East Africa philanthropy award will be awarded to individuals and organizations that set a standard of excellence that is an inspiration for others to follow.

Nomination Rules

  1. Nominations can be received from both individuals and organizations whether members or not members of the East Africa Association of Grantmakers.
  2. Nominated individuals and organizations must be East African or have registered offices in East Africa. East Africa in this context covers Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi
  3. All submissions will be reviewed according to set criteria by an Awards Panel who will select from the submissions the individuals and organizations that best exemplify leadership, excellence and commitment in promoting philanthropy in the region
  4. The Awards Panel reserves the right to move a nominee to another category if deemed more appropriate
  5. Nomination for an award does not automatically mean that the nominee will receive the award
  6. The Awards Panel reserves the right not to give an award to any category
  7. This being an award that is aimed at promoting philanthropy in the region, nominee should be willing to participate in any media coverage activity related to the Awards programme and should be available to participate at the East Africa Philanthropy Awards gala event.
  8. Submitted materials cannot be returned. Therefore please do not submit original materials that are of value to you or your organization/institution
  9. Only nomination documents that have been correctly and fully completed and submitted by the deadline will be considered
  10. Successful nominees will be notified at every stage of the evaluation process.
  11. The East Africa Association of Grantmakers reserves the right to cancel or reschedule the awards at its discretion. As a courtesy all participants will be duly notified and advised on alternative dates.

The Evaluation and Selection Process

The East Africa Philanthropy Awards are based on a submission and evaluation process that relies on a thorough review of each of each nomination according to set criteria. These criteria are consistently applied by the technical committee and the jury.

Stage One

All nominations received will be reviewed and if they meet required conditions for nominations will proceed to the next stage of evaluation. All nominations received will be acknowledged by the Awards team.

Stage Two

Nominees will be invited to submit a self assessment from through a tool that has been developed by EAAG and its partners. Each nominee will submit a dossier of documents and evidences –one dossier separately submitted for each award listed above. The dossier will be evaluated against set criteria. The Technical Committee will do the assessment and evaluation and shortlist three nominees from each category. The shortlisted nominees will undergo a further verification process to authenticate information provided. The Technical Committee will then submit names of the successful nominees together with their report to the jury for selection of a winner.

Stage Three

Upon receiving names of successful nominees from the Technical Committee, the jury will further deliberate on the shortlisted nominees and select individuals and organizations that best exemplify leadership, excellence and commitment in promoting philanthropy from each category.  The jury’s decision will be final and cannot be contested.
